Free Decodable Poems for Kindergarten and Early Readers
Share
Decodable poems are one of the most underused tools in a structured literacy classroom. Yet, they are also among the most powerful.
Unlike leveled readers or predictable texts, decodable poems use only the phonics patterns students have already been taught. Every word is decodable and every line builds confidence. Their rhythm and repetition make them perfect for fluency practice, choral reading, and take-home reading practice.
Here's how to use them (and where to get them free!)
Looking for Decodable Books for Kindergarten and First Grade?
Decodable poems are powerful, but they are most effective when used within a systematic, cumulative phonics sequence that gradually builds students' decoding skills. If your students are building foundational reading skills, they also benefit from a structured progression of decodable books aligned with the Science of Reading.

What Are Decodable Poems?
Decodable poems are short texts written with phonetically controlled vocabulary. Like decodable books, they only use words that match a student's current phonics knowledge.
The rhythm and rhyme make them especially effective for:
- Fluency practice — repeated reading feels natural with poems
- Choral reading — the whole class reads together without anyone feeling put on the spot
- Take-home reading — short enough for families to practice daily
- Literacy centers — students can read independently with confidence
Take Fluency Further with Decodable Books
Poems are a great starting point, but for a complete structured literacy progression, pair them with decodable books that follow the same phonics sequence.
Our Reading League vetted decodable classroom library includes 60 books spanning the full kindergarten and first-grade phonics progression — from alphabet sounds through fluency and comprehension.

How I Use Decodable Poems in Small Groups
Here's a simple routine that takes about 5 minutes inside a small group lesson:
Step 1 — Introduce the poem. Read it aloud once while students follow along. Point to each word.
Step 2 — Choral read. Read it together two or three times. Focus on accuracy first, then expression.
Step 3 — Partner read. Students take turns reading to each other while you listen and observe.
Step 4 — Take it home. Students glue the poem into their poetry journal or reading folder to practice at home.
The repetition builds fluency naturally and students feel proud because they can read every single word.
Why Decodable Poems Support the Science of Reading
Research on reading development shows that fluency grows through repeated, successful reading of text that matches students' decoding skills. Poems are ideal for this because:
✔️ Short enough to reread multiple times in one session
✔️ Rhythm supports prosody and expression
✔️ Controlled vocabulary ensures 100% decodability
✔️ Engaging enough that students want to reread them
When students read decodable poems, they're not guessing. They're actually decoding!
