From Bee Stings to Lesson Plans: Managing Teacher Jitters

Buzzzzz....

Oh, the sweet sound of summer! The bright sun, the blooming flowers, the ripe cherry tomatoes, and the joy of freedom in the air. But along with the change of seasons comes.... a swarm of bees! Trust me, it was not a pretty!
The Encounter
Yesterday, as I worked on our garden, deep in thoughts about the start of the school year, I failed to notice the warning. The bees were watching. They sent two reps to remind me to stay away. I didn't notice, or rather, the teacher jitters blinded me. Then, it happened! I found myself facing a swarm of bees!
I flapped my arms around in panic and run. Was that the best decision? Apparently no- I have over 30 red itchy bumps to prove it.
Returning to school after a restful summer break brings forth a sense of apprehension for teachers. Would I remember how to create lesson plans? How about morning meeting? What themes and classroom decorations will I use this year?

As I sit here now, thinking about my experience of being chased by a swarm of bees, I can't help but see a connection to the start of the school year. I think about the experience of facing a room full of eager, curious, and unpredictable kindergarteners. The fear of the unknown, the pressure to educate and inspire, and the responsibility to create a positive learning environment. All these hopes and expectations piling up and causing the emotions and feelings to bite away.

Embracing the Challenge
Whether you are woken up in the middle of the night from back to school nightmares, being chased by a swarm of bees, or a bit jittery about the first day of school, think of how these experiences provide us with an opportunity for growth and learning.
Here is what I have been thinking: Facing a swarm of bees requires calmness and patience. Similarly, the return to school demand composure and confidence. I am clearly not a beekeeper, though I know they rely on their protective gear and knowledge to handle bees. Teachers, similarly, equip themselves with the necessary tools and strategies to navigate the school year successfully.

Building Resilience
For me, the return to school teacher jitters is not something that I work to overcome. It is a yearly reminder of the importance of adaptability and resourcefulness. Like bees diligently building their hive, teachers too, must establish a joyful space for learning. Through careful lesson planning and a supportive classroom community, they lay the groundwork for their students' success.
I created this classroom management and classroom decoration resource. It follows a bee theme. I hope it is helpful to you!
Happy Teaching!
