Build-a-Word Activities to Support Decoding Skills

Hey there!

On this post I want to highlight an activity that we have been doing in our reading centers. We call it the "Build-a-Word" challenge. This activity can be a great addition to your repertoire as your kindergarteners work on cracking the reading code! Here are some of the great learnings that takes place in this center.

Words Detectives:

Segmenting and blending are critical skills our students need to become confident, fluent readers. This building words activity allows them to tinker with letters and sounds, piecing together CVC words like fabulous linguistic detectives.

Hands-On Fun:

The interactive cards and visual cues make this activity super engaging. I love watching my kindergarteners piece together letters to form words. You can really see their hands, minds, and joy of learning all working together. This is a reminder of what kindergarten is all about - learning through play!

Multi-sensory Opportunity:

I like to extend this activity by incorporating sensory elements. For example, I fill a tray with this fun colorful craft sand and bury letters in it. I have my students dig for letters and use them to build CVC words. They can also practice writing the letters and words in the sand.

I am also a BIG FAN of this alphabet letters pack! We use them for practicing blending and segmenting. My students love learning about Word Families, so we create cute little homes for words that follow the same rhyming patterns.

I also like this set of foam letters. They are self-adhesive which adds that extra element of fine motor skill practice to it :)

Happy teaching!
