Playdough Center Ideas

Ready for a squishy post? Let's talk about playdough! Playdough has been a staple in kindergarten classrooms for a long time, and for good reason! It offers endless fun for children while building fine motor skills. AND... it also helps students tap into their creativity!

Patting, squeezing, rolling, and shaping playdough help strengthen those fabulous small muscle groups.

Fine Motor Skills and Creativity:

1. Hand Muscles: Kneading and squeezing playdough helps children develop the small muscles in their hands and fingers. These are the same muscle groups that will help them with tasks such as writing and drawing.
3. Creativity: Playdough is an open-ended vehicle for children to express their imagination. They are able to transform a clump of playdough into animals, vehicles, and an entire neighborhood.

1. Bakery and Zoo :
   • Set up a bakery with rolling pins and cookie cutters.
   • Have children create different treats like cookies, cupcakes, and bread.
   • Set up a farm or zoo in the science area. Use toy animals as model. Students can also use these printable visual cards to create their own animals to add to the farm or zoo!

AND.... do not leave out speaking and listening while you are at it! So, encourage your students to tell stories around their creations.

I also keep a supply of ready to go play-doh, air dry putty, and Foam in my classroom. I ask parents to donate these for the class at the beginning of the school year.
