Summer Tutoring with Decodable Books: The Structured Literacy Approach That Actually Works
Share
Summer is here — and for a lot of kids, that means six to ten weeks without structured reading practice. For beginning readers who are still building their decoding foundation, that gap matters.
But here’s the good news: you don’t need a full classroom setup or a complicated curriculum to make a real difference this summer. All you need is 15–20 minutes a day, the right books, and a simple routine.
This post is for tutors, reading specialists, and parents who want to use the summer to build genuine reading skills — not just keep kids busy with worksheets.
Why Decodable Books Are the Best Tool for Summer Tutoring
If you’ve been following the Science of Reading research, you already know that decodable books are one of the most powerful tools for beginning readers. But they’re especially valuable for summer tutoring for a few specific reasons.
They’re short and focused. Most decodable books are 8–16 pages long. A student can read one in 5–10 minutes — which means you can fit a warm-up, a first read, targeted word work, and a second read into a 20-minute session without anyone losing focus.
They build confidence fast. Because every word in a decodable book uses phonics patterns the student has already learned, students experience success from the very first page. That “I can read this!” feeling is incredibly motivating.
They target exactly what each student needs. Decodable books are organized by phonics skill, so you can choose a book that targets the exact pattern a student is working on. No more guessing whether a book is “right” for a student. If they know the phonics patterns in the book, it’s the right book!
They prevent the summer slide. Research consistently shows that students who read regularly over the summer maintain their reading skills better than those who don’t.Decodable books make daily reading practice achievable because they’re short and manageable.
A Simple 20-Minute Summer Tutoring Routine
You don’t need a complicated lesson plan. Here’s a simple, effective routine you can use every session:
Minutes 1–3: Phonics Warm-Up
Start with a quick review of the phonics pattern you’re targeting. Use letter cards, a whiteboard, or just say the sounds aloud. For example, if you’re working on short vowel /a/ CVC words, practice blending a few words orally before opening the book: “/m/ /a/ /t/ — mat!” This activates the phonics knowledge the student will need for decoding.
Minutes 4–6: Book Introduction
Briefly introduce the book, the title and the topic. Keep it short. The goal is not to preview every page or predict the story from pictures. Just give enough context so the student can focus on decoding. Avoid picture walks as they encourage guessing, not reading.
Minutes 7–13: First Read
Have the student read the book aloud while you listen. When they make an error, stop them gently, point to the word, and prompt: “Look at each sound. What does this word say?” Resist the urge to just tell them the word. The decoding attempt is where the learning happens.
After the first read, spend 2–3 minutes on any words that caused difficulty. Write them on a whiteboard, tap the sounds, blend them, and read them in isolation before moving on.
Minutes 14–17: Second Read
Have the student reread the book, this time focusing on reading smoothly and with expression. Fluency develops through repeated reading. In the second read is where you start to see that automaticity develop. You’ll be amazed at how much smoother the second read sounds compared to the first.
Minutes 18–20: Comprehension Check
End with one or two quick questions: “What was this book about?” or “What happened at the end?” This reinforces that decoding is always in service of understanding. We read so we can comprehend.
How to Choose the Right Decodable Book for Each Student
The most important rule: the book must match the phonics patterns the student has already been taught.
Here’s a simple way to figure out where to start:
- Can the student identify all letter sounds automatically? If not, start with alphabet/letter-sound books before moving to connected text.
- Can the student blend 3-sound CVC words (cat, sit, hop)? If yes, start with short vowel CVC decodable books.
- Can the student read CVC words fluently? Move to books with digraphs (sh, ch, th) and blends.
- Is the student reading short texts accurately but slowly? Focus on fluency — use books they’ve already read for repeated reading practice.

Tips for Making Summer Tutoring Sessions Stick
- Keep it consistent. 15–20 minutes every day beats 60 minutes twice a week. Consistency is what prevents the summer slide.
- Celebrate the wins. Every book finished is a real accomplishment. Keep a reading log, add stickers, or let the student pick the next book. Small celebrations build big motivation.
- Send books home. If you’re a tutor, send the books home after each session for the student to reread with a family member. Repeated reading is one of the most effective fluency-building strategies .
- Don’t skip the second read. It takes only 3–4 extra minutes and dramatically accelerates fluency development.
- Match the book to the student, not the calendar. Don’t rush through levels just because summer is short. Mastery at each level is what builds a strong reading foundation.
