Z Is for Zebra: Letter Z Activities for Kindergarten & Preschool

Z is for zebra!
Z is the final letter of the alphabet—but that doesn’t mean it has to be an afterthought.
When children are learning Z, give them opportunities to recognize the letter, hear its sound, say words that begin with Z, and practice forming the letter.
Here are some simple letter Z activities for kindergarteners and preschoolers.
What Sound Does Z Make?
In English, Z commonly represents the /z/ sound.
Have children say:
/zzzzz/
Ask them to listen carefully. You can also have them place their fingers gently on their throat while saying /z/ and notice the vibration.
Then practice:
Z says /z/.
The /z/ sound is a voiced sound — children can feel the vibration in their throat when they say it. This makes it a great letter for building phonemic awareness through sensory exploration.
Z Is for Zebra
The most familiar Z word for many young children is: Z is for zebra!
Ask:

From Z to Reading
Alphabet learning isn’t the final destination. It’s the beginning.
Children eventually need to connect:
Letters → Sounds → Words → Sentences → Books
When children understand how letters represent sounds and have opportunities to practice those connections, they’re building the foundation for decoding and independent reading.
So celebrate the final letter of the alphabet:
