B is for ball: Building Phonemic Awareness and Letter Identification

How to use this book:

• Show the cover and point to the title. Ask students to share what they notice. Have students locate all the letters /b/ in the title and trace over them with a finger while saying its name and sound. Reinforce the idea that each letter has two forms- a lowercase, and an uppercase.
• Tell students that in the story, the author shows us different children playing with a ball.
• Point out how the author makes the first letter of the word ball on each page red to make it stand out.
• Show students how the book also has different games to practice learning the letter form, name, and sound. Model for students how to use the pointer finger to interact with the various games in the story.
