I is for insect: Building Phonemic Awareness and Letter Identification

Using This Book:

Look at the Cover – Point to the title and ask students what they notice. Have them find all the I/i letters and trace them with a finger while saying /i/ /i/ /i/.

Letter Focus – Letters come in uppercase and lowercase forms. Can students find both in the book? Say: “This is the letter I. It makes the /i/ sound, like in ‘insect.’ Let’s say it together!”

Story Connection – The story shows different types of insects. Can students name any other insects they know?

Reading Together – Notice how the first letter of insect is red on each page. Place your finger on the letter I and say /i/ before reading the whole word. Model how to use a pointer finger to play the games inside the book and practice letter learning.
