How to Use This Book

Before Reading:

• Explain the structure: “In this book, the author puts words together to make sentences.”
• Introduce letter colors: Point out that the author gave each letter its own color. "Each letter has its own color to remind us that letters have names and sounds.”
• Preview the pictures: “Let’s look at some of the toys we will read about!”

During Reading:

• Model how to sound out CVC words labeling each toy, segmenting the sounds and blending them together.
• Track print: Show how to point to each word as you read the sentences.

After Reading:

• Comprehension check: “What toys did the author include in the story?”
• Personal connections: “What is your favorite toy? Why?”
• Discuss the ending: “How is the ‘dog’ the same or different from the other toys?”
• Sentence structure: Show students how to find the word "dog" in a sentence.
• Word count activity: Point to each word in a sentence and count how many words are in it.
