Nug the Bug ~ Developing Segmenting and Blending Skills

How to Use This Book:

Before Reading:

• Point out that there are three words in the title. Ask: “What do you notice about the words ‘Nug’ and ‘Bug’?”
• Practice segmenting and blending the sounds in each word: /N-u-g/, /B-u-g/.
• Tell students that in this story, they will meet Nug, a playful bug who loves to have fun!

During Reading:

• Read some pages aloud, modeling how to sound out CVC words.
• Practice reading words followed by an exclamation mark with the right expression.
• Ask: “What are some things Nug likes to do?”

After Reading:

• Ask students to share what made the story humorous and what they thought was funny about Nug.
• Discuss the author’s description of Nug as a “fun bug.”
• Ask: “Do you agree with the author? Why or why not?”
• Encourage students to share their own fun activities and compare them to Nug’s.
