How to Use This Book

Show the cover and point to the title.

• Trace each letter of the title with your finger while saying its name and sound:
  • P /p/, e /e/, t /t/, s /s/ → "Pets"
  • Focus on the P and point to the uppercase letter. Discuss how the uppercase letter is different from the lowercase letters.

Point to the author's name and ask:

• • "What are these letters? What sounds do they make?"
  • "Are any of these letters in your name?"
  • Point out the letters that are written in red and explain how that helps emphasize the sound at the start of the word. 
  • Model how to read some of the words. For example, you might point to the word “cat,” sound out /c/ /a/ /t/, and blend them together to read "cat." Ask students to repeat after you to practice reading the words with you.

Comprehension & Discussion:

• • Encourage students to talk about the different pets shown in the story.
  • Ask: "What makes each pet special?" "How is the last pet different from the rest?  "What makes this pet different from the others? Why do you think the author saved it for last?"
  • Ask students to talk about which pet they liked best and why.
  • Encourage students to talk about a pet they have or wish they had.
