How to Use This Book

  • Show the cover and point to the title.
    • Ask students to share what they notice.
    • Point out that there are two words in the title.
    • Name the letters and practice their sounds.

Phonemic Awareness & Phonics:

  • Read the title together.
  • Segment and blend the sounds in each word: /I/ /l/ /ī/ /k/.
  • Write the word like on the board and talk about the long i sound.

Reading the Story:

  • Tell students that in the story, the author puts words together to make sentences.
  • Read some of the pages and model how to sound out the words printed in red.
  • For example, point to the word cups. Cover the letter s with a finger.
    • Segment the sounds and blend them to read cup.
    • Then uncover the s and show students how that last sound changes the word to cups (plural).

Discussion & Comprehension:

  • Ask students to talk about the different things the author mentioned in the story.
  • What other things might the boy in the story like?
  • What patterns do they notice in the words?

Story Reflection:

  • Ask students to talk about the ending.
  • How are the moms different from the other things in the book?
  • Why do they think the author ended the story that way?
