My Dad ~ Developing Segmenting and Blending Skills

How to Use This Book:

Before Reading:

• Show the cover and point to the title. Ask students to share what they notice.
• Point to the word “Dad” and trace over each letter with a finger while saying its sound: /d-a-d/. Then, blend the sounds together.

During Reading:

• Tell students that the story shows different families and what each child enjoys doing with their dad.
• Show some pages and model how to sound out the words.
• Ask: “What activities did the author mention in the story?”
• Have students share their favorite activity from the book.

After Reading:

• Ask students to think of other fun activities the author could have included.
• Discuss how the families in the story are similar and different.
• Encourage students to share special activities they enjoy with their own families.
