My Mom ~ Developing Segmenting and Blending Skills

How to Use This Book:

Before Reading:

• Show the cover and point to the title. Ask students to share what they notice.
• Point to the word “Mom”, trace over each letter with a finger while saying its sound, then blend them together.
• Tell students that in this story, the author introduces different families and shares what a child and their mom like to do together.
• Ask: “What are some things you like to do with your mom or a special grown-up?”

During Reading:

• Show some of the pages and model how to sound out words as you read.
• Read with fluency and intonation, emphasizing how the words flow naturally.
• Pause to ask: “What activities has the author mentioned so far? Which ones do you like best?”

After Reading:

• Ask students to share which activity they liked best in the story.
• Encourage them to think of other fun activities the author could have included.
• Discuss similarities and differences between the families in the story.
• Ask: “How is your family like the ones in the story? How is it different?”
