My Pet ~ Developing Segmenting and Blending Skills

How to Use This Book:

Before Reading:

• Point to the word “Pet” and trace over each letter with a finger while saying its sound: /p-e-t/. Then, blend the sounds together.

During Reading:

• Tell students that the story is about a girl and her pet, but it’s also a silly story because even her pet has a pet!
• Show some pages and model how to sound out words by segmenting the sounds and then blending them together.
• Ask: “What different things did the author mention about the pet in the story?”

After Reading:

• Ask students: “What are other pets that people have?”
• Have students make personal connections by sharing about their own pets or a pet they wish they had.
• Engage students with fun questions like:
  • “What would it mean for a dog to have a bug as a pet?”
  • “What pet would a bug have?”
