How to Use This Book

  • Show the cover and point to the title.
    • Point out that there are two words in the title: "The" and "Box."
    • Name the letters and practice their sounds:
      • T /t/, h /h/, e /e/ → "The"
      • B /b/, o /o/, x /ks/ → "Box"
  • Tell students that in the story, the author puts words together to make sentences.

    • Show a sentence and count the words with the students.
    • Point to the spaces between the words and explain how spaces separate each word in a sentence.
    • Model how to sound out the word by pointing to each letter and making its sound, then blend them together.
    • Show how to find the word within the sentence.
  • Point out the exclamation points and question marks.
    • Show how these punctuations make the sentences sound different.
    • Model how to read sentences with excitement when you see an exclamation point and how to ask a question with a rising intonation when you see a question mark.

Discussion & Comprehension:

  • Ask students to talk about the different things mentioned in the story.

    • Ask: "What went in the box? What went on the box?"
    • Encourage students to identify and describe the objects in the box and on top of the box.
  • Ask students to talk about what other things might go "on" or "in" a box.

    • For example: "What other things could you put inside or on top of a box?" This helps build vocabulary and understanding of prepositions.
