How to Use This Book:

Before Reading:

  • Point out that there are two words in the title.
  • Write the word “bug” on the board and break it down into individual sounds: /b-u-g/. Then, blend the sounds together to say the word.

During Reading:

  • Read some pages aloud, modeling how to sound out CVC words.
  • Practice reading the words inside the talking bubble with expression.
  • Point out question marks and have students practice reading sentences with the correct intonation.
  • Ask: “What happened in the story?”

After Reading:

  • Help students make a list of rhyming words from the story. Encourage them to add additional rhyming words to the list.
  • Discuss the ending:
    “Was that a good way to end the story? Why or why not?”
  • Encourage students to think of other ways the story could have ended.
