Yum! ~ Building CVC Fluency for Early Readers

How to Use This Book:

Before Reading:

• Show the cover and point to the title. Ask students: “What do you notice?”
• Trace over each letter with a finger while saying its sound, then blend them together.
• Point to the exclamation mark and read “Yum!” again, making it sound exciting.
• Introduce the story: “This book is about different types of food. Let’s find out what foods the author included!”
• Show some of the pages and model how to sound out words, breaking them into individual sounds and blending them together.

During Reading:

• Point out words in a different color. Explain: “The author did this to help us pay extra attention to these words.”
• Model how to sound them out, emphasizing the last sound in each word.
• Ask: “Which food do you think was the yummiest?”

After Reading:

• Make connections: “What other yummy things do you like to eat at home?”
  
• Discuss the ending: “Why do you think the author chose to end with ‘Yum! Yum! Yum!’?”
• Encourage students to express excitement about their favorite foods by saying “Yum!” with enthusiasm.
